Releaf founder Zac Bensemann spent 4 years studying mechanical engineering and several more working as a project engineer — Highly stimulating, but increasingly restless. The work was mainly indoors, behind a screen, and disconnected from the kind of direct, tangible impact he was looking for.
He quit, travelled, and came home with a clearer sense of what he actually wanted. He moved to Motueka with his partner in 2024, started getting to know the community — and realised that what he’d always loved wasn’t just building things, but growing them.
Releaf started from that realisation: that working with nature, with your hands, and directly with people who trust you — that’s the work worth doing. The engineering brain is still there. It just shows up in how we plan, how we work efficiently, and how we genuinely care about getting the result right.
